Shadunjen Van Kampen

Joining the established art world

Shadunjen’s collection is a mix of watercolour painting, ink block printing and pen drawing. I create works that I hope are visually attractive but also tell a story or show my home. Shadunjen’s to paint the “ugly”, such as old equipment, garbage, plywood, industrial scenes and through attention to detail show the beauty she sees in these things. Her most recent works that she has prepared for this show tell her story a bit, as well as include references to Yukon First Nations stories and legends that help her understand her place in what she feels is her split world.

About the Artist

Shadunjen is a Northern Tutchone artist, a member of the crow clan and the Champagne and Aishihik First Nation. Professionally, she works in commercial transport. In 2020 she became the first Yukon First Nations woman to earn a commercial pilots license, and she added a class 1 drivers license and first year Heavy Equipment Technician training to her toolbox in 2021. In her time off she loves to travel the world, create art, read and be outdoors.
